I heard about that list night on the news. It's really sad, but I hope she had a happy life. It sort of seems like the end of an era.

Wow, I was just reading about her on Wikipedia last week. She claimed (of course) that she had absolutely no memories of that evening, but was very involved with Titanic memorials, preservationists and awareness campaigns. It was just a month or two ago that the last living soldier from WWI just passed away too. I have to agree with Baby Gonzo that it really does seem like the end of an era.

Really? I don't remember hearing about that. What a shame that it is all too often these events are often mere footnotes lost to history.

Wow I didnt know that either Dave, it really does seem like the end of an era.

Im sure Milvina had a WONDERFUL life, and just like the movie said "Youll die an old lady warm in her bed"

I really enjoy thinking of stuff like this- of old turned to new, going back in time- its a sad subject, and I know Im rambling because I cant discribe it. I guess what Im trying to say is this really moves me.

Bummer. Major bummer. That's... that's really sad. There goes, well, a legend... really. A rather underrated one at that.

Sorry, I was wrong. The March 12 featured article was about Lazare Ponticelli, the last surviving officially recognized veteran of the First World War from France, and he died last year. This is still a great read though and I recommend it. There are still in fact quite a few surviving WWI veterans. I apologize for the misinformation.

I hope now that even though the last survivor has passed away, we continue to remember the lessons of the Titanic story. There were many reforms in safety and regulations in the early part of 20th century that are still in place today. Unfortunately, so many of these regulations were only enacted after tragedies like the Titanic. It's a clear story of greed, carelessness and lack of concern for the most vulnerable of our country.

Let's hope we never forget how far we've come and the sacrifices of those who came before us.
