SP2 is a big update to the security of Windows. When a piece of software is released there are always bugs still in the code. The Service Packs are the major updates that fix these bugs. The SP2 update for XP has been around for years and is safe. I have never heard of anyone having a problem with it. Now, having said that, there is always a first. So make sure to save any important files you dont want to lose to a separate drive or disc before installing it.

The only update I have not installed is a recent one that asks to send information to Microsoft about your product ID codes so that they can look for pirated software. There is a popup that tells you what it is going to install before it does it on that one and nothing bad will happen if you dont install it.

Hope this helps.

I never instal those things. On occasion I get an option that when I turn off my computer, a second turn off button comes up that says instal updates and turn off. I dont get the little popup thingies that much. I get them on my desktop alot, but not much on my laptop

I always do the critical updates and I have never had a problem. The only thing that messed me up was the Windows Genuine authentification thing. After I installed it the first time, I got a popup window saying I wasn't running a genuine copy of Windows. I knew I was, so I had to contact Dell and have them talk me through removing some little file to fix everything. It was a pain.

Ah yeah, I recently installed that one as well, and everytime I turn on my computer, I get a popup window saying that my version of Windows XP is no longer secure and that I need to install that Windows XP Service Pack 2 so I'll be secure again, but in order to install that it says I need to back up my system and that makes me uncomfortable because I don't know what it's going to do to my system that recommends me backing it up.

It looks like either way you go, that something has the possibility of going wrong?

Sgt, it's funny, because I use to always get them on my labtop but not my desktop!
