First of all, you guys know how you regularly get those "Windows Updates" automatically installed on your computer right? Well, there's one update waiting to be installed on mine, but I haven't installed it yet because I'm a little uncomfortable about... now ALL of these updates recommend you "close all other running programs" while the update is installed, BUT this one is also recommending that I "back up the system". THAT makes me uncomfortable! The update is "Windows XP Service Pack 2",and I was wondering if anyone else has installed this update, and if so, WHAT does it do to your system that it recommends you to back it up?!

Well, can ANYBODY tell me what it does to the system that recommends you backing it up? Seriously, I NEED an answer!

You're definitely not, Snowthy, but I'm really sorry, I haven't heard of that update you got. I have to say, I don't blame you for feeling uncomfortable. It sounds kinda dangerous! I really hope there's someone here who can help you. And I'm no computer whiz (fer sure!) but I'd be weary about installing that one.

Here is Microsoft's description of what the Service Package does. Going to the company's web site is a good way of researching these things.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.mspx

It sounds like one of those things you don't really need on your computer, it's just an option. If you don't want it, don't download it.

But the problem is the LAST update I installed keeps telling me my system is no longer secure and won't be unless I install this Windows XP Service Pack 2, but it keeps recommending I back up my system before I install, and that's what's making me uncomfortable.

Then I recommend contacting Microsoft and asking them what to do. That's all I can think of. Good luck!

I never install those updates on my computer. I did once just to see what it did and it never asked me to close out of anything or backup my files. Just to restart now or later. So I don't know what to tell you.

Yeah you ALWAYS have to restart your computer in order for the updates to take effect.
