Question about Snuffy

apoligies if im dragging up an old subject here, i had a squiz through some archived threads and couldnt see anything....

ive always wondered, and its something noones ever been able to tell me...did snuffy only used to appear as big birds imaginary friend in the beginning seasons of sesame street?

if so, how did the show make the transition to him actually being seen by the 'grown-ups'?
