Question about line in, "Santa Claus is Coming to Town"

The song goes, "You better watch out, you better not cry". When I pictured the song, the picture to go with the verse, "You better watch out" showed a child about to do something dangerous(enter a construction area), and the picture, "You better not cry" showed the child crying because he was hurt from being in a dangerous area(he fell in the hole or an iron bar fell on his head). Does the line, "You better watch out, you better not cry" mean to play it safe and if you don't, don't cry if you get hurt? If not, what does the line mean?

I always thought "you better not cry, you better not pount" meant don't complain and drive your parents crazy, because Santa will put you down as naughty.

I always thought of it as, you better be a good kid or you won't get anything. I guess this is a way to bribe kids into being good so they get something for X-mas. But, the thing is, kids get things anyways. Even if they are bad. I say, sell coal to kids who have been bad, that way you won't have kids like that. Knowing they can get away with stuff like that.
