When things get too big, and money comes into play, go figure.

You can protect yourself by deleting your files from the site:
The foregoing license granted by you terminates once you remove or delete a User Submission from the YouTube Website.
BTW, I was just reading on someone's blog that while MySpace did have a clause like this in their TOS, they removed it after it generated a lot of bad publicity like this. As the article I've linked to points out, the rights that clauses like this assert would never be conceded for so little in a standard contract negotiation in the entertainment industry.

Good points, Buck. The language is broad and nothing has happened yet to prove YouTube's intentions. The change might even be sparked by some private acquisition negotiations that we don't even know about. I'm just in shock that YouTube would take such a risk with their popularity!

Better to be safe than sorry at this point!

Youtube is pretty much hemorraging money at this point, without any apparently plan to recoup funds. It *seems* like their business model is just to keep getting more funds from venture capital. It might make sense for this change in the terms of service if they were intending to offer a higher-quality for-pay version of the site, or they had plans to release the most popular videos on DVD, or something similar.

I know, that's exactly what surprised me the most about this. There's something like 100 video hosting sites and some like Google's and Revver you can even make money on your videos so this is really risky for them.

Right now, it looks like a really stupid move on their part.

did anyone catch a television commercial that had something along the lines of "Youtube sweepstakes" in it? I wasn't paying close attention to it so I'm not sure what it is but it could be a connection, explaining all these loose ends.
