Maybe it's the pacing of a full on novel vs a series of 3 panel strips or something...

That's the problem with the specials, they use the same strips, but they seem a little more wooden when a story is based around them. It worked fine for the Charlie Brown and Snoopy show, but not so well for the hour long "I want a Dog for Christmas."

The difference... the Peanuts comics this comes from were written when Schulz did some of his best work... Star Wars prequel's came from Lucas being a fuddy duddy perfectionist.

Understand, I'm a huge fan of Schulz's work. Doesn't mean every single strip he did was the best. It's hard constantly coming up with new ideas.

That's exactly the problem... they are duty bound NEVER to create new stories or new media, and everything from specials to kids books needs to be based off of strips that existed. This causes the TV specials to be a little staggered, though... but it also prevents very bad artists and writers from creating official new Peanuts strips.

Still, I wanna give this special a real shot... they went back to the late 60's peanuts designs in animation, and somehow that makes the characters more expressive. Same thing they're doing with the GN...
