It seems like during the early years, Oscar was almost always seen inside his trash can. On the Old School set, the only times he was outside of his can were in C is for Cookie and in the season 4 and 5 closing credit crawls. Still, does anybody know when it became common for Oscar to appear out of the trash can?

I do know of a few more moments from the early seasons when he was outside of his can. I read about an episode at Muppet Wiki where Oscar got locked out of his trash can. I have also seen a handful of early cast photos where he wasn't in the trash can. I have also seen a still photo from the first season, featuring Oscar, Bert, and several monsters and anything Muppets. Oscar didn't appear to be in his can there (though Oscar was held a bit low... so his trash can could have been out of the shot). And I know that there were a few sketches from the early 1970s where Oscar went to Ernie and Bert's apartment, without being in his trash can.

Even as late as Christmas Eve on Sesame Street, he was in the can most of the time. The only time in that special where he was not in the trash can was during the I Hate Christmas number.

I am guessing that Oscar commonly appeared out of his can around the time that Fluffy was introduced, since Fluffy usually stuck her nose out of Oscar's can, and Oscar would have been behind the trash can.

My, how times have changed. In the last few years, it has been very common for Oscar to get out of the can, usually by being behind the trash can.

It does seem weird how in the early days they liked to keep Oscar in his can as much as they could, and if he DID happen to go somewhere, he would walk with it on him, and his feet sticking out of the bottom. From the late 70's to early 90's he was usually seen with Bruno carrying him around if he was away from his trashcan. Also there have been a few times that he has been seen around the street, but in a different trashcan. Like in a 2000 episode when he appeared in a different trashcan in the arbor area when Barkley was getting a bath. Also I have been told there was another trashcan in the fixit shop he would occasionally pop out of when he came to see Maria and Luis. I guess they just liked to keep him in his can as much as they could to keep him in tune with his overall charachter. But here are some times I have seen Oscar in different locations without his can at all.

He was seen outside of Hooper's store in a 1987 episode where David hires Gina. Oscar wanted to apply for the job opening.

He was at the work bench in front of Hooper's in the 1992-1993 season when it was Telly's last day with his cast on, and he kept bugging Oscar to please sign his cast before he got it taken off.

He was seen in Big Bird's nest area in this episode here....... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSxDHReCQK4 He comes on at the end of the clip.

There are many other times Oscar was seen with no trashcan. But those are just a few examples. But most of the time, at least in the early days, it was the infamous "travelin trashcan" :grouchy:

I know that during the 1980s Oscar continued to walk with his legs out of his can even after Bruno was introduced. It seems like this is the only way he travels in Sesame Street Live (I wonder how that is done... does a midget wear the hole Oscar suit and move his mouth when he sticks his head out?). Bruno was around by time Don't Eat the Pictures was broadcast, yet Oscar still ahd his traveling trashcan, and Bruno didn't appear at all in that special (in that same special, it seems a bit weird to me that in some scenes, the wide shots, he travels with his can, but in other scenes, the close-up shots, he is out of the can... could he actually prefer to take a break from being in the can every once in awhile? And this was when he was at a public museum, too).

Despite what I've been saying, I find it weird in Elmo in Grouchland that Oscar never appears inside his can (not counting the inside shot of him in his can efore Elmo gets transported to Grouchland), and not only that, but he appears outside the can and in frotn of his trash can area. He's rarely out on the street in frotn of his can (unless he is being transported in it, or unless he is driving a vehicle).

Does anybody know when Oscar was last seen in his traveling can (not counting Sesame Street Live or Sesame Park).

That's a good question. The last time I remember seeing him in the Traveling Can was around 86 or so when Danny Devito as a Grouch Art Collector wanted to take Oscar and his can to the museum. The scene ended with Danny, and Oscar walking away from a distance and Oscar walked beside him with his feet sticking out of the bottom. But he may have been seen walking in his can later than that. Mabye someone else knows.

I saw a clip from that episode in the special Sesame Street's All-Star 25th Birtdhay: Stars and Streets Forever. In that clip, Danny Devito was holding Oscar. But I am 99 percent sure that I saw Oscar walking in his can on the show (and not just in Christmas Eve on Sesame Street or Sesame Street Live) back in the 1980s, though I can't remember any specific moments.

And it also seems like in Follow That Bird, Osdcar was either in his trash can or in his slopy jalopy. The only times when he wasn't in either was in the scene where the cast prepared to rescue Big Bird, and in the grouch resturaunt scene.

There was a Sesame Street book, I forget the title (it was something to the effect of "The House of Many Colors"), that had Oscar walking with his head out of the can and with his feet out from the bottom. On the show whenever he walks with the can his head isn't sticking out.

See in this part that Oscar walks out on the street inside his can. Not with a guy in a costume, but it's in the same way as normal Muppets are handled by the Muppeteers. Which makes me think how come they've never done this before. Plus, Oscar's seen in his can a lot on merchandise...weird.

In those scenes where Oscar is in another trash can, how do we know that he's not visiting other grouches, who we just don't see?

I don't know if anyone has mention this yet. But there is an older episode that he was shown with his can walking down Sesame Street. This is the first episode where you see Oscar and his travling trashcan.

I believe that we have already mentioned this in this thread. That first happened in episode 276.
