It seems like during the early years, Oscar was almost always seen inside his trash can. On the Old School set, the only times he was outside of his can were in C is for Cookie and in the season 4 and 5 closing credit crawls. Still, does anybody know when it became common for Oscar to appear out of the trash can?
I do know of a few more moments from the early seasons when he was outside of his can. I read about an episode at Muppet Wiki where Oscar got locked out of his trash can. I have also seen a handful of early cast photos where he wasn't in the trash can. I have also seen a still photo from the first season, featuring Oscar, Bert, and several monsters and anything Muppets. Oscar didn't appear to be in his can there (though Oscar was held a bit low... so his trash can could have been out of the shot). And I know that there were a few sketches from the early 1970s where Oscar went to Ernie and Bert's apartment, without being in his trash can.
Even as late as Christmas Eve on Sesame Street, he was in the can most of the time. The only time in that special where he was not in the trash can was during the I Hate Christmas number.
I am guessing that Oscar commonly appeared out of his can around the time that Fluffy was introduced, since Fluffy usually stuck her nose out of Oscar's can, and Oscar would have been behind the trash can.
My, how times have changed. In the last few years, it has been very common for Oscar to get out of the can, usually by being behind the trash can.
