Origin of the girl tradition of wearing each other's sweaters

I have seen teenage girls wear each other's worded sweaters, e.g. somebody wearing a sweater of a private school she did not go to(it was her friend's sweater), or a teenage girl wearing a sweater with her female friend's last name. In other words, the wearer was wearing sweaters stating things she has never been associated with. Does anybody know where this practice originated?
