I've seen various places using, "Christmas in July" as a gimmick. A TV network aired Christmas specials once in July, and some park had a Christmas party with some guy pretending to be Santa in July. Since all this Christmas stuff was in July rather than any other month, it must be some expression. What does the phrase, "Christmas in July" mean?

i've never heard of it before... doesn't really sound like an expression though... more of a gag.

Funny that I had never heard of this when I named a danish friends new album "Christmas in Juli." (Jul is Christmas in danish, Juli is July) But the phrase must have been stuck in my head from someplace else I suppose...

Christmas in July B.S.A. style

When I was a kid. I was in the Boy Scouts and we went to a summer camp called TMR (short for Ten Mile River) in upstate New York. Since TMR was only open in the summer we had a Christmas in July week on the week of July 25th. It was fun. Santa came (more or less) and some other kid in my troop managed to snatch one of the pillows that made up his belly.

Christmas in July is a popular event in Australia, mainly restaurants and clubs and places like that hold events and christmas dinners and functions. Workplaces sometimes hold christmas dinners too, its because its cold during that month and we can celebrate christmas in a non hot climate. Its a silly thing really. Another money making excuse to have fun.
