I have nothing but disdain for these busybody parental groups. However, while some of them are usually well meaning, most just jump on the bandwagon because it pushes the parental responsibility to someone else so they're off the hook. I remember when the frivolous lawsuit about Spongebob having his on cereal that some of the parents filing it were blaming the fact a cartoon character was on the box for their kids whining because they didn't get it. That's kinda how kids act, and I understand the need as an adult to shut them the heck up as fast as possible. Problem is, kids like to throw anything in the cart when you take them shopping. So a good amount of those parents jumping on board with these groups are essentially saying "I don't want to have to raise my kids, so let's ruin it for everyone."

Meanwhile, those looking for the magic bullet to kill the obesity problem aren't looking for real answers because they require work. Remember the episode of The Simpsons where the teachers went on strike and at the town hall meeting Edna Krabapple was telling the mob that they can't give their kids a good education and the townsfolk were livid, but when Skinner mentioned this would take tax money, the same townsfolk were even more livid (and it went back and forth)? Yeah. That exactly.

That reminds me of the big folk "hero" principal that refused big evil socialist government money because once they switched over to healthy school lunches none of the kids (some well into their teens) ate the horrible meals. The whole message was delivered as government overreach without a shred of irony or nuance. Now, what of course was missing is the fact that there's a reason crappy food that's bad for you is cheap. It doesn't take any talent to dump a bunch of below Banquet frozen dinner quality into oil, but it does take talent to make whole grain pasta not taste like garbage and grilled chicken to not turn into foam rubber. No one complained about the food service the school district was in bed with, and of course if you cook healthy foods wrong they taste bad. That's why so many adults still hate vegetables. They're treated as a chore, they're boiled wrong with all their flavor taken out, and their parents forced them to eat it because it was good for them. Healthy Food needs to be cooked specifically for anyone to want to eat it. Dumping a frozen bag of fried foods that aren't even of quality into an oven? Less work, less money, all corner cutting. And no one complained about that.

I remember back in the old days, there were nutrition ads, but they weren't so hardcore like today. Also, some nutrition shows back then said that pizza was good for you because it has all 4 food groups, but now it's fattening. And that peanut butter can be a good protein substitute for meat, but they now mention the sugar in PB. And milk was really good for you, but now it's just lowfat milk. And they said then you need the most servings of bread, but today, you need to eat less bread. And then, they said orange juice was good for you, but now they want you to drink less of it. Food orders just keep changing every time.

Don't forget butter: in this day and age, it's "bad" for you because it raises your cholestoral, but back then, nobody had problems with it.

And regular milk is now considered bad for you too, you have to drink "milk" made from soy or nuts . . . how do you extact milk from soy or nuts?

But what about Nutella? The commercials always make it out to be a healthy-schmealthy spread, but have you read the nutrition facts on the jar? That stuff is high in fat!

But the problem with pizza is that it's greasy, and grease is where all the fat content is, that's why a lot of people dab their pizza before they eat it to absorb some of the grease to cut down on the fat content (whenever I eat a Frescheta pizza, I use up three paper towels soaking up the grease that it's drenched in before I eat it) . . . but the problem is it's now considered "gay" to dab pizza, so . . . yeah, apparently "real men" don't care about their health.

And thanks for bringing up bread (and carbs) - apparently that Atkins crock is popular again right now. Wasn't the Atkins craze, like, over ten years ago? I can actually remember as a kid when McDonald's and other burger joints began offering flour wrap and alluminum foil versions of their burger for people who were on that craze.

Dude... everything's bad for you. Maybe with the possible exception of certain grains and vegetables. Even most fruits unless they have like a crapload of vitamins aren't technically good either. They have sugars in them, and while everyone loves to vilify sodas, fruit juices aren't so hot either. Unless you're drinking something high in antioxidants and/or Vitamin C, you might as well be drinking Coke. Apple Juice isn't exactly a healthy alternative, and it's mostly sugar with too small amounts of vitamin A (unless you get an enhanced vitamin additive, and usually those don't do much good, and you wizz them mostly out).

They're banning Oreos now? Now that's just stupid. *is instantly reminded of the Gumball episode "The Safety"* No, but seriously. That's what it feels like these days. Banning Oreos is only gonna increase obesity. People be like:
Boo to this picture!

Some of it depends on how much money certain lobbyist groups throw at Washington.
Back in the 90's eggs were bad because they were high in cholesterol. Now their proteins and good amino acids are a godsend. So forget all the propaganda from 20 years ago, okeedoke?
Also back in the 90's the milk industry spent millions on celebrity print ads to have Eddie and Alex Van Halen with their milk mustaches "Got Milk?" (just long enough for Eddie to put down his bottle of vodka), but now, the same ads could never be used because of a new lactose-intolerant generation.
I'm surprised the mindless folks who want to ban the evil Oreos haven't been singing the praises of Whoknew cookies.. which are GLUTEN FREE! That's another bandwagon prople are mindlessly jumping on. While gluten-free foods (if you can afford them) do have some health benefits, they're not the be-all-end-all either. But try telling the gluten-free crusaders that.

The thing about gluten-free food is that they're supposed to only be for people who genuinely have gluten allergies, but a lot of people are jumping on the gluten-free bandwagon because it'd yet another fad diet that the media has hyped up.

In fact, several months ago Jimmy Kimmel did a segment on his show where he asked various different people why they were on a gluten-free diet - which they did explain for various reasons - then he asked them if they even knew what gluten was. Guess what? Not a single person even knew what gluten was, so they made themselves look like fools when they were all, "Gluten isn't good for you, so eating a gluten-free diet is better for your health. I just don't know what gluten is, though." It's like how for a while there, we actually had intelligent commercials that went something like this:

PERSON #1: D00d! Y u eatin dat? It got da high fructose corn syrup in it!
PERSON #2: And your point is?
PERSON #1: D00d! U no wat dey say about da high fructose corn syrup!
PERSON #2: And that would be?
PERSON #1: Duuhhhhh...
PERSON #2: That high fructose corn syrup is made from corn, and is similar to ordinary cane sugar in that it's perfectly okay to eat in moderation.
PERSON #1: I can haz u food now?

Remember those?

As I've said before with essentially everything, there's two extremes. Those who want to ban things and those who want to classify Ketchup as a vegetable. Depends on which lobby throws the most money out.

But yeah, nothing's really good for you, but there are essential nutrients in certain things to qualify as healthy. Eggs vs. sugary breakfast cereal and pancakes (essentially all carbs from that one), eggs comes out the lesser evil.

Actually, it reminds me of a bit from Gumball. The episode "The Safety" has the Watersons giving up food completely (with a laundry list of why they can't eat them) and just eating pure elements and minerals. Obviously a commentary on those who stress over how terrible everything is. Then again, George Burns smoked huge freaking cigars to the point where it was his schtick and he lived to be 100 (or almost).

Quoted for truth. Gluten free products are for those who need them. Gluten occurs naturally in breads and other baked goods that use flour as a staple. If anyone's going for a fad diet, they might as well jump back on Atkins and avoid grains all together. Though someone on some show accurately predicted the whole grains fad. But yeah. Fad diets are for insecure Yuppies that don't realize that dying metabolism is all a part of getting old. Diets don't work, because you have to be on them for the rest of your life.

I just wish that fad dieters got that Gluten Free stuff is of medical importance. Some data suggests that they have unhealthy things in them to substitute the lack of gluten. That's what was wrong with the low fat craze in the 90's. The fat was removed, but something had to be put in its place.

Corn syrup bugs me because it's a whole corn lobby conspiracy. It's all about cutting corners with inferior ingredients. And then the drought hit and corn prices went up, and therefore junk food prices shot up as a result. So if it's no longer cheap, what's the point? I say if soda's like a buck fifty a bottle and up, put the freaking sugar back in.

It is nice to know that more and more products have fazed out that ingredient because of all the public shaming of it. Not that it's any better for you than table sugar, mind you.

Shaming is better and more effective than an outright ban. Still, I have to wonder... if corn was supposed to make everything that much cheaper, why didn't they take into consideration that a drought causing a corn shortage could happen? It got so bad that they couldn't even feed livestock with it. And remember, it was a cheap substitute for that as well. I guess we can forget about corn plastics and ethanol as well. And it really is a shame, since corn could have done so much good rather than being just a substitute for sugars. Now it's like, might as well just use sugar as all corner cutting benefits have gone.
