This is one of those both sides are completely freaking idiotic cases.
This is clearly the case of some obnoxious, upper class tattletale of a "concerned" parent (or group of them) that wants the world to bow down to their precious little brats so they can release all parental duties to everyone else. Bored pseudo-activists that see one idiotic web story and think the world's coming to an end, and overreacting to it as poorly and as immaturely and shortsightedly as possible.
YET... Where is this news coming from? Oh. A far right blogger. Yeah. Let's scower the web for some podunk school district doing something dumb so we can trot out the same "BLLLAARRRGGGHHHH!!! Dey takin' away uhr freedomz!" propaganda that runs a movement of even angrier, less mature, and more shortsighted idiots. Essentially the stupid complaining about the stupid. And it doesn't even matter if there's a good point or mature discussion out of this, it turns into "AWWW, dem Limozeeen Libruls are gunner force us to et teh Broccolis and marry gay MexYcans to get a green card ta turk ur jerrrbs."
Here's the thing. Who's reacting to this the worst? People who have been out of school for quite some time. The story isn't about "jeez, look how dumb this is," it's about "AAAAHHH!!! Conspiracy to take away our freedom" from people who this doesn't affect, yet want a big scary monster to blame everything wrong with their lives instead of having an intelligent conversation. As for the school, no freaking diggidy duh this is moronic. This is going to do jack crap to fight the obesity thing that affects poor people the most anyway. It's the same deal. Blame the junk food, not the systematic problems that keep poorer and lower income families buying the huge dollar store cola bottles (the 3 liters of the worst soda there ever was)and low quality foods from gas stations. When it comes to the issue of health, I hear hemming and hawing and a lot of BAD ideas that punish addicts, but no viable, honest, helpful solutions.
Oh... and kids hate freaking health food unless they've been fed nothing but by their parents. And usually those are parents that have nice incomes and can cook vegetables in a way they're edible. So...yeah... there's that. If they can't get their snack cakes at school they sure as heck can get them on the way home. So bad solutions and bad journalism all around.
