This has been bothering me for a while, so now I'm just going to finally ask about something...

Why is it TV shows go through so much legal drama getting on DVD over the music, whether it's the use of a song on a particular episode, or right down to the actual music score that was composed for the show (like how all Rocky and Bullwinkle score had been replaced on DVD), yet movies never have that same when they're released on DVD? Are the copyright laws regarding the use of music different for TV shows and movies, or what? What's the deal?

Yeah, I believe that rights to air something on tv and releasing something on dvd are two different things. In fact, in Wayne's World, they had to remove the three or four opening notes to Stairway to Heaven and replace it with generic notes on all home releases and tv airings befcause they only got the rights to use it in the theater.

Its a shame they have to remove music segments, especially from shows that rely on said music as a formula.

I remember renting the Super Mario Bros. Super Show series and I noticed a lot of the famous rock songs during the backgrounds had been removed and replaced with Mario theme music.

Rights for this stuff was hammered out long before the advent of home video of any kind came into being... and then when they came up with the system, they had to renegotiate music rights for even greater amounts of money (because, this time they're selling the product), and that's if the music copyright owners want to co-operate.

But again, Mellissa knows the intricacies behind this stuff better than most people on the board, and she could explain it in detail.

As for Bullwinkle, isn't it because they somehow though, George Lucas like, that Jay would have wanted to change the music score all the sudden?

Well, shortest as in easiest to explain without the annoying technicalities and frustrating tid bits that make no sense. It's complicated crap, that's what it was.
