Why won't Disney release The Muppets Take Manhattan on November?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, :frown: but...

Someone over at the Home Theater Forum confirmed with a contact at Disney that The Muppet Christmas Carol DVD will have "When Love Is Gone" cut from the widescreen version, but not the pan & scan. Appearently the widescreen will be the "theatrical version" and the "fullscreen" will be the "Extended-and-Yet-Cut" version. :boo:
Aww... I know I'm the opposite of most Muppet fans when I say this, but I like that song. It's so sad... Maybe if someone is smart, they'll put it on special features as a deleted scene.

Becuase they don't have the rights to the film.

The Muppets Take Manhattan and Muppets From Space are still partially owned by Sony. When Disney bought the characters from the Jim Henson Company they did not buy those two films completely.

The ownership of the four non-Disney Muppet films (The Muppet Movie, The Great Muppet Caper, The Muppets Take Manhattan and Muppets From Space) were split between the Jim Henson Company Sony. The two Disney made Muppet films (The Muppet Christmas Carol and Muppet Treasure Island) were split between the Jim Henson Company and the Walt Disney Company.

When Disney bought the Muppets, they got the Henson Company’s part of the ownership in all the film, and had the option to buy Sony’s portion if they wanted too. Disney opted not to buy the rights for The Muppets Take Manhattan and Muppets From Space (however they did opt to buy-out Sony’s stakes The Muppet Movie, and The Great Muppet Caper giving them full ownership of those films; and they also now had complete ownership of The Muppet Christmas Carol and Muppet Treasure Island). However they only have partial ownership of The Muppets Take Manhattan and Muppets From Space.

Maybe someday they will buy these two films fully, but as of now their ownership is split between Sony and Disney (so Disney has limited control of them, but when it comes to commercial releases, Sony has some control). With Disney having their own in-house DVD production sector and distributor (Disney DVD & Buena Vista Home Entertainment); plus the company being the way they are, it does not look as if they would team up with Sony at this time to re-release the these films through Sony Home Entertainment (like Henson had done to get the films released). So right now it is hard for Disney to give them the proper commercial release. It looks like the past DVD/VHS releases will be all that we get, until they decide to buy out Sony’s stakes in the film.

hey GW just to clear things up a bit, Sony NEVER had a stake in "TMM" or "TGMC" they do how ever with "MTM". Now about the stake in "TMM" or "TGMC" Henson holy owned both these film (now Disney) Sony only got disterdution rights to re-release them on DVD/vhs. :zany: (P.S. thats why Disney/Buena Vista, when thay had the "Jim Henson Video" line in the 90's, got to re-release "TMM" and "TGMC" on vhs. just a little tidbit)

Really Disney had the chance to buy "MFS" and "MTM" holy from Sony? I didnt know that! nice to hear that! Kinda wish they (Disney) did. Well someday maybe! :halo:

What we need to do is email Sony about rereleasing MTM and MFS on DVD as Special Edition DVD's.

Sony can't do that. Disney owns part of the productions. When Disney bought the Muppets, they got the Henson Company’s part of the ownership in all the film (Henson owned part, Sony owned part). Disney had the option to buy Sony’s portion if they wanted too and own the productions in full. But Disney opted not to buy the rights for The Muppets Take Manhattan and Muppets From Space. If Sony wanted to release the films they would have to team up with Disney.

With Disney owning the Muppets and having their own in-house DVD production sector and distributor (Disney DVD & Buena Vista Home Entertainment); plus the company being the way they are, it does not look as if they would team up with Sony at this time to re-release the these films through Sony Home Entertainment (like Henson had done to get the films released). So right now the only way we'll see them re-released is if Disney decides to buy out Sony's part of the productions (like they did with The Muppet Movie, and The Great Muppet Caper).

Either Disney has to team up with Sony (not likely); or they have to buy out Sony's part (somewhat likely); or they films won't get a home video treatment.
