I don’t have time to do a comparison with my uncut version, so I was wondering if someone could confirm exactly what Noggin cut out of the first season premiere of Sesame Street. We’ll be including this in the Old School DVD review. Typically, Noggin cut about six minutes per episode.

I’ve seen a list of the exact cuts Noggin made in this episode several times and was hoping someone had the list accessible.

Yes, but the Episode #1 page lists all the sketches in the uncut version (widely available on the trading circuit and for viewing online at www.museum.tv). What did Noggin remove?

If you look at that page, it mentions that some of the scenes from the skit where kids play a game got cut. It mainly just cut the parts where the black kid got hurt.

I believe at one point the page for episode 1 mentioned that one (or more) of the 30 dots segments was cut. It no longer says what was cut, though.

Hopefully someone WITH a Noggin recording of #1 can find out and add the info to the page. That's what the Wiki is for.

Well, I don't have a copy of the Noggin episode, but from what I've read on here, the parts that were edited out were from the "Kids Play Follow the Leader" skit, specifically: 1) where Jimmy (the klutz of the group) goes around a tunnel instead of through and falls into a pile of trash, and 2) where Jimmy goes under the sawhorses instead of over them and gets a bucket of water poured onto his head. You can see the UNEDITED skit here:

If those two scenes are included on the DVD, then that probably means the premiere episode on the DVD is unedited (and I *really* hope it is!).

Hope this helps. Perhaps someone with a copy of the Noggin episode can chime in and confirm or add to what I've already mentioned.

Just because that sketch is presented unedited doesn't mean that the whole episode is. Consider Yourself could be edited, since that song wasn't written for Sesame Street. Another song that wasn't written for Sesame Street, I Whistle a Happy Tune, was performed in the secodn season premier. That song could also be edited, depending on whether the copyright holder didn't charge too much and/ or if the copyright holder agreed to license the song for the DVD release.

And ironically, both of those songs also appeared on The Muppet Show in the second season.

I will go ahead and warn so that people aren't too disappointed that "Whistle a Happy Tune" is included on the set, but the AMs singing "Consider Yourself at Home" has been cut... the scene simply ends after Gordon has finished dressing them. Also missing from the set is the Bach song performed by the Swingle Singers and Stevie Wonder performing "123 Sesame Street". You'll read more about this in the review and what they've done to fill the episodes out.

I'm guessing (theorizing) taht these were left out because sesame workshop was unable to get rights to use those songs for the dvd? "Consider Yourself" is that broadway tune from Oliver! and Stevie Wonder composed his special version of '1-2-3 sesame street', so SS probably had the rights to broadcast these at the time they were initially used for the show back in the early 70s, but either those rights expired and they couldn't get them renewed...or it might have been too expensive/difficult to get renewed permission, so for the sake of getting the dvds out with minimal hassle, they just cut them out altogether.

What's more confusing is that the Stevie Wonder song was included on the "Songs From the Street" 3CD box set (audio only).

I'm sure you all agree with me that the edits are a bummer, but we can also agree that it's not the end of the world. In order to prevent all "heck" breaking loose on the forums, here are some steps to take:

1) Buy the set anyway. There's some great material on it that wasn't shown on Noggin, and besides, Sesame Workshop needs our support.

2) Write polite letters to Sesame Workshop expressing both your gratitude for their efforts to reach out to Sesame Street's older audience, and your hopes that future sets will be un-edited.

3) SAVE YOUR NOGGIN RECORDINGS. Use them to make full edits if you can. The Wiki guides may come in handy for that.

4) If you must vent out any anger, do it at Amazon.com or any other such place where you can write reviews. Venting out anger on the forums will only drive people away from them. You remember what happened when Noggin stopped showing "Unpaved."

In short, just chill. OK? Things could be a whole lot worse.
