:attitude: Sam is swell! You can't not like Sam, that's just being un-American...

hello!

this feels a bit like the first day at school.

*ahem*

my name is lili, i'm 22 and live in melbourne, australia. i work as a literary events co-ordinator, working in young adult literature which i love.

i've always been a huge muppet fan, but have just had a fairly major renaissance since i have discovered the marvels of amazon, timelife and multiregional dvd players (there is barely any muppet stuff available for our region)... oh, and it might have had something to do with a nasty breakup too.

i love kermit (naturally) and rowlf and ernie and link hogthrob (especially after i heard that story about jim henson using the link voice when he was doing 'man' things like carving the roast). ooh, and i like pepe, too.

right now i can't get the captain vegetable song out of my head so i keep cracking up at work and everyone looks at me like i'm a crazy person.

i have been a very regular visitor to muppetcentral for a few months now, and i really love the site (especially the radio!).

Heh! I'm American through and through. It's a darned nice country. And I do like it here.

But Sam is unable to comprehend that America and its people just might be imperfect or that there are other perfectly fine countries out there. I believe that's called "bigotry".

He's also the World's Unfunniest Muppet, which is the main reason why he disgusts me so.

Hello. My name is Phantom and I am a muppaholic...*whispering from off stage*

What do you mean this isn't Muppets Anonymous?...

Hello? Is this thing on?...

(I'm not exactly "new", but I haven't posted in this thread until now.)

But that is the joke of it. He's written that way with these things in mind. I thought people realized that about Sam.

Anyway.

i love sam... he has some of the best lines... the whole rudolph nureyev (sp?) episode of TMS was just fantastic. he's so fantastically disapproving and i love the way he says 'culture'.

and i love it in the muppet christmas carol where he says "it is the American way... ahem. It is the British way."

:attitude: cracks me up.

Well, exactly. lol.

And Americans are a lot more willing to poke total fun at themselves (Sam amongst that) than credit seems to be given for sometimes. The world takes us way more seriously than most of us do, gee whiz. You'd think we all walked around chanting U.S.A.! all day long. (We don't.) Most of us hate that stupid chant anyway, it's embarassing, or bad form, as the Brits would so aptly say.
