Well, a few days ago, I announced that my sister is going to have a baby... and now, I have some news from the other end of the spectrum.
Yesterday, my Mom had a much-anticipated hysterectomy. Everything went well (they took everything they were going to take and left everything they were going to leave), but while she was operating, Mom's doctor noticed something else. It appears that Mom has a golf-ball sized tumor in her colon. The doctor told us that she could have taken the tumor out during the hysterectomy, but without the prep for colon surgery, that would mean six months with a colon-sack.
The doc consulted with another doc, and he advised her to close up my Mom and then do a colonoscopy after she has recovered from the hysterectomy. The colonoscopy is tomorrow, and we'll find out then if the tumor is cancerous or not. The doctor says that either way, the mass will have to go, so she'll be having surgery for that early next week. So now we're just waiting for the colonoscopy to find out if it is cancer or not, how far it reaches, etc.
It was tough to hear the news, but by now we've all sort of adjusted and are just trying to be patient for the test tomorrow. One of my aunts (my mom's older sister) is flying in tomorrow morning, but my sister and my grandparents (all of whom live out of state) probably will not be able to make it for a few days. We are surrounded by church friends, though, who are taking very good care of us. We are all very thankful that this problem was discovered when it was, and didn't go unchecked. I have not heard this from a doctor, but it seems to me that if a tumor can be found before it is felt, that has to be a good start.
Anyway, just remember all of us, and I'll keep you all updated!
