Also, the fact that Tweety Bird is a boy has always kind of thrown me off.

Blame this one on Warner Brothers' marketing department back in the 90's. they put Tweety on girl's clothing, but they also dressed him up in very girly clothes for quite some time because of that.

I knew, and always have that Tweety was a girl. In fact, they even mentioned this one an episode of Sylvester and Tweety Mysteries.

Actually I knew Tweety was a boy, he had that slightly edge to his voice, if that makes sense.

Yeah, both Tweety and Elmo have a certain edge to their voice that means that if you hear more than the Tickle me Elmo and see more than the marketting devision Tweety, you can tell.

Also, you can tell Big Bird is a boy if you listen, I was always thrown off by the feathers.

I'm so glad you brought this up! For years, I wasn't sure if Gladys was supposed to be a girl or a boy, Lil. Now obviously she was a cow and had a girl's name. But I don't know, she sounded more a like guy to me, Lil (of course now we know why!). I wonder if that's why they had her wearing those flower hats, maybe other kids were confused!

Yeah, I used to be confused of the Mex of Gladys myself.

I think the next generation will have the same confusion with Piglet. He is often presented in a rather 'pink' fashion.

Well, pigs are pink and so are some hot dogs, too. Just not red hots.

I knew somebody who thought that Big Bird was a girl, even when I corrected him. He also thought that Phil from Rug rats was a girl (I also used to think the same, and when I learned that Phil was a boy he didn't believe me).

I used to think that Caroll Spinny was a woman. I thought a woman was talking for a boy bird.

Along the same vein did anyone ever watch Garfield and Friends? I always thought Nermal was a girl, but in truth Nermal is a boy!

I used to thank that too until my brother informed me otherwise. Like the story says how Jim Davis wanted to through the public off as to weather he's a boy or not, but evidently stated in a comics strip that he was infarct a he.

Lol, I just have to say, I'm glad I'm not the only one with this! I remember how surprised I was when I found out that Tweety was a boy... before that, I always had assumed he was a girl, lol.

I used to think he was a girl too. But It wasn't because of the merchandise. But it just affirmed to me that I was correct in my assumption.

There arn't many female Loony Toons are there...I think Granny was in a legue of her own!

I always thought that RoadRunner was a girl. Is she?

I never thought RoadRunner was a girl to be honest, and I know the Coyote held up a sign once referring to him as "he." On the other hand, it may not always be the same RoadRunner!

Well... There were Granny and Petunia Pig. There was also Honey Bunny in the coloring books, but she got replaced by Lola Bunny starting with the movie Space Jam. There's also Melissa in Baby Looney Tunes, not sure what she is though.

The Road Runner's a boy... There was this one cartoon of his which ended with him being flirted by a female Road Runner, it's a rare cartoon and it happens at the very end. Of course, it doesn't help matters that the Looney Tunes males were willing to dress up as girls and flirt with the big bad guy to save themselves at times.

I'm laughing here. The Japanese Elmo sounds VERY feminine and confused even me the first few times but I knew the American one was a boy. Nermal I always knew was a boy, I've been reading Garfield since the 70's. The cartoon voice threw me but I figured he's suppose to sound like a pre-pubesent male.

When I was little, I though Grover was a girl. I have no idea why but it took a while to sink in that he was a boy. I guess I wasn't use to a guy saying he was cute and lovable!

Well now, wait a second there Drtooth. The Mexican co-production of Sesame Street, Plaza Sésamo doesn't have Elmo as part of its cast. There is a female red monster named Lola, who could be thought of as the Elmo counterpart character for that international co-production, but it's not a Mexican Elmo.
