The ones I saw were just an "L" shape with the short side of the "L" inserted into the wrist. I have a picture of Bert laying on the table with his arm rod pulling out and cotton batting coming out the hole in his hand.

For a few years after I learned that the Muppets were puppets, I used to always wonder how the muppets could change into different outfits without the arm wires getting in the way of the sleeves.
