It's been about a year. Think we'll see Vol. 16-20?

TMS DVD inquiries

Hi Phillip,

It's great to see more Muppet Shows on DVD. However, I've been hesitating to buy these best-ofs because I've been waiting to see if JHP will release all five seasons on five box sets. Do you forsee this happening any time soon? Has there been talk at JHP of releasing the entire series on DVD? Is it worth writing a letter to JHP about this? I've been thinking of writing to them the past few months regarding TMS and other Muppet-related programs that are presently unavailable on DVD.

Has anybody else here made similar inquiries to JHP? I may have posted these questions here before, but maybe some updates have surfaced that may be worth posting here.

As was announced last month, Time-Life has updated their Web site with five new Muppet Show DVD releases. They are:

Volume 11 - Roy Rogers & Dale Evans, Kenny Rogers, Mac Davis
Volume 12 - Liberace, Rita Moreno, Lynda Carter
Volume 13 - Tony Randall, Beverly Sills, Pearl Bailey
Volume 14 - Liza Minnelli, Madeline Kahn, Mummenschanz
Volume 15 - Senor Wences, Lola Falana, Juliet Prowse

I just ordered the new discs from Time-Life. Used coupon code "CA25R2" to get an additional 25% off the order. Does anybody have these yet? (They were available by phone on September 30).

It will be interesting to see what Muppetisms and Muppet Movie parodies are included. We'll update our Muppet Show DVD review with a list of all the new extras as soon as possible.

Also, has anybody seen that Time-Life is now selling Muppet Family Christmas and Emmet Otter DVD's? They appear to be the Columbia versions, but it makes you wonder if they are wanting to make more Muppet items available in the future.

JHC knows that fans want the entire series in a box set. While Time-Life/Columbia holds the rights it's not possible for another company to release the entire series until the current contracts expire. From a production standpoint, the products would be seen as competing with one another. So the only way the whole series could be released anytime soon, would be if Time-Life or Columbia decided to do it. Given the path they have chosen (3 episodes per disc), it's much more realistic to hope for future volumes rather than a season-by-season set.

Like you, I would like a complete "official" collection, but we are probably at least 3-5 years away from that happening in my opinion. I do think it may happen someday, but not anytime soon unfortunately.

If you are reading this and you'd like to see more DVD's released, fill out a Time-Life customer service form. Choose "suggestions" as your topic. Mention that you've bought all the Muppet Show episodes available and that you'd love to see more. Time-Life has listened to fans in getting these DVD's released, so hopefully we all can make a difference again.

It's sad that Columbia has been so aggressive with cheap season box sets (Sanford and Son, All in the Family, Cheers, the Jeffersons, and Good Times are all about $20 a season) and the Muppets get three per disc trickling out so slowly.

Hi Phillip,

Thanks for your note. I probably will get those DVDs soon, just to show my support for the products, and, hopefully, help stimulate JHC or Time-Life to release all five seasons. The first 4 volumes are available in Toronto for purchase, and the vol. w/ Steve Martin, Carol Burnett and Gilda Radner will be released in December or January. (The Martin ep. aired tonight on CTS, btw.) I'll complete the TL customer service form, and I may also still write a letter to JHC; every little action could help our cause. I encourage all other TMS fans reading this to do the same!

I'm interested in buying the whole set of 15 DVDs, but I'd obviously like to save the most coin while I'm at it. I know that, in the past, there's been a chain of coupon codes that you can insert to lower the price, so I was wondering if the same deal applies today.

DVDs

I just got the set of 15 Muppet Show DVDs,(YAY!!!!). As many of you guys mentioned here, I sent an e-mail to Time Life asking if they planned on releasing more episodes, here is the reply I got:
______________________________________
Dear Mr. Harren:

Thank you for writing.

Unfortunately, we have no current plans to offer additional DVDs in the series. We regret any disappointment caused.

We hope the collection will be enjoyed. If you have any questions, or whenever we can be of service, please feel free to contact our office.

Sincerely,

Although this is bad news to me, could it mean that they are going to let go of their contact with the episodes, and perhaps someone else will be releasing them as sets?

I'm not sure how all of that works, so please forgive my ignorance.

BTW, I am new here and I LOVE this website and forum. Good work!

Apparently, vol. 16-20 were planned as late as last fall. However, with Disney's upcoming purchase of the company they are trying to secure all the Muppet video rights. Whether or not Disney ever releases TMS DVD's, it should surely be back on US television sometime in the next 6-18 months, as soon as September 2004 or possibly as late as September 2005.
