What is the history of the muppets?

Well, not all Muppets sprang to life fully formed. In the case of Gonzo, for instance, the first puppet was first used in 1970, but the character associated with that puppet design debuted in 1976.

goodness, I am way out of the loop on these things.. Some of those charactures I don't even recognize the names of hah, It's obveous that I'm a youngster with no clue what i'm talking about, since more then half of those dates were before I was even born... the muppets take manhattan was in 1984??!?! goodness.. that was when I was born... I thought that movie was from the 90's! good greef, I have a LOT to learn... where could I find "Jm Henson The Works" ?
