Muppet Fur Conditioning?

I heard that Fozzie/Cookie Monster type fur is actually ordinary faux fur that is "conditioned" to look as shaggy as it does. Is this true?
If not, How do they make the fur look like that?

I was told that too, I was going to try to starch the fur but does any one know for sure?

You can create a sort of "scruffy" bunched look by using a mixture of water and heavily diluted white glue (just be sure to test it on scraps first!). There are probably other, better methods but I have done that and it works quite nicely after a little practice.

I bet....you could pull a Sydney Pollock and get so attached to the fur for the project...and sleep on it for a few days.....I bet that would work.....but probably wouldn't be much fun....

well you can but be careful, to long in the dryer will cook most fake furs,

i know this topic has been discussed numerous times,

But here it is again

for the most part the furs used on sesame,and muppet puppets is custom dyed, the water needs to be very hot and it pretty much cooks the fur(melting the plastic fibers a bit ), this causes the fur to scrunch up a bit , after it is dyed it is rinsed in cold water , then hung up to dry, you can add more texture by using thick clear , non -greasy hair gels, or like buck said , mixing white glue and water , or using "STIFFY" that you can get afabirc and craft stores, dilut that stuff more, then use a cheap spray bottle to apply it,

no matter what you will have to experiment, there is no magic bullet easy way to do it

Oh, and a couple of more things you may need to know shtick...

If you plan on dying the fur, you can get white 3 inch shag fur here - http://www.mendels.com/fur_solids.html. You can always trim the fur shorter, but you can't trim it longer.

Any faux fur you get your hands on will more than likely be polyester. Use these dyes, as per ravagefrackle in previous posts - http://www.aljodye.com/main.html (the Aljo polyester dyes).
