If you want to talk about misappropriation of words then simply look at American English. There never was a more mangled and misused collection of words.

Actually I found a slang dictionary published by Cassell and written by Jonathan Green. The entry for Muppet reads:

muppet n. [1970s+] 1 a child, a small person (cf. MUNCHKIN).
2 an unnattractive person. Possibly one who is mentally retarded. [the puppets created by Jim Henson and featured on TV's Muppet show during the 1970s]

Now which one is fairer the OED definition or the Cassell slang dictionary one?

Pick on America week? Perish the thought. It'd take more than a week for any jibes to sink in and register.

I'll take the first one, a lot of the Muppets are pretty cute.
