Playing Along
(There are two couples happily reclining in the two tweed lime green recliners in room 20. One couple is completely platonic, but very snuggly. The other couple is not as platonic, but they are only snuggly on and off—some of it depends on what is happening on the television screen. Currently, they are in the “on” phase.)
Catherine: Wow—this is so great. I’ve really missed you guys. And you look so vibrant and wonderful!
Fozzie (leaning his head over on her shoulder): Oh yeah! I had forgotten how funny I was!
(Kermit made a sound that might have meant anything, but at least it covered Piggy’s completely undignified snort of derision. Kermit followed up by dipping an apple slice in whipped caramel and stuffing it into Piggy’s mouth. If it hadn’t been so delicious, she might have protested, but she contented herself with leaning over Kermit’s reclining body to get another one. She also got a handful of cheese balls and retaliated by putting the whole fistful into Kermit’s mouth. Kermit would have made a scrunchy face, but he had to chew and swallow first. When he finally did that, Nancy Walker’s big dance number with Sweetums was on, and he refrained from comment.
When there was a scene change, Piggy sighed with contentment and brushed her hair back from her face in what was so obviously a fish for compliments that Kermit ignored her on purpose for several minutes, but when she cleared her throat for the third time, he laughed and relented.)
Kermit: (dryly) You look good, Piggy.
Piggy: (turning big innocent eyes on him) Then? Or now?
(Kermit starts to comment, but Catherine beats him to the punch.)
Catherine: (with reproachful sarcasm) Very subtle, dear. Why don’t you just plug in the APPLAUSE sign?
Fozzie: (without even looking at Piggy) I think some of the bulbs are burned out.
(This time it is Kermit who snorts, which brings to an abrupt end the snuggling on the second lime green recliner. He accepts his fate with resignation, and continues to watch the screen. When the tape comes to an end and the main menu returns, with Kermit and Fozzie bantering over and over on the screen, Kermit heaves himself out of the recliner and goes to the DVD player. He takes the first DVD out—the one with Piggy’s sultry pose on the cover, and is momentarily distracted putting it away in the carrier. He takes out the second DVD, which bears his smiling mug, and puts it into the DVD slot.
When he returns to the recliner, it is possible that his momentary distraction has been observed, and there is a slight softening in the posture of his seat-mate. Kermit takes that as an invitation, climbs into the chair, puts his arm around his girl and picks up the remote control.)
Kermit: “Play all”?
(Three voices answer him in chorus.) Oh yeah. Play all.
