Today, I recieved my new issue of PEOPLE. Inside is a short article written on the young poet and author of Heartsongs. MS finally caught up with him, and he died at age 13.

Hi Trekkie,

This is indeed sad news. Mattie actually had a rare genetic form of muscular dystrophy called dysautonomic mitochondrial myopathy, not MS. His mom has an adult form of the disease.

I saw Mattie interviewed a couple of times on Larry King's show, and I was just blown away by his maturity and his ability to engage people to think about ways to make this world a more peaceful place. I know he had a deep faith in God, as well as a strong belief in humanity. I believe that he is in a much better world now, and lives on in the hearts and minds of everyone he touched.
