I don't think so.

It's just a technique used by the film makers to add drama... if it had ben a slow bit, it wouldn't have been as much of a shock for us to realize his world had changed.

I think that section of the film is more of an It's a Wonderful Life reference than anything else (movie-wise).

Yea, but I still prefer late 80's Piggy.
Come to think of it, I prefer late 80's everything.
