You won't believe this, but I have this on episode #2367 from 1987! It seems that back then, there really weren't too many limits on the show on the word "outdated." In other words, they could use pretty much anything as far back as Day 1. Not only was he imaginary back then, but it was the old Jerry Nelson-voiced Snuffy. However, the only time you can really tell that it IS Snuffy is when he says, "Oh, I'm sorry." For most of the song (or the whole song) he sings in a completely different operatic voice.
it wasn't as uncommon for them to show guest appearances from the past even though Collins along with Buffy St. Marie were sort of part time regualers.
