It seems to me like Little Bird was basically an early 70's charachter. It seems like she made her debut during the show's first Season, and was only there for a couple of years. I think shortly after Snuffy made his debut and once she became established as Big Bird's "Best Friend". Little Bird may have remained on the show during Snuffy's first year, but not too long after that. Now once the early 90's came around, Little Bird actually did make a few comeback appearances. There was a time when she was seen with Gina and a few of her bird friends in the arbor area, at the beggining of a 1990 episode. Then a few years later she came back and had the starring role in an episode when she was looking for a new home. I remember Telly being frightened in that one because he thought Big Bird had shrunk. It's nice how they brought Little Bird back a few times during the later years. After seeing that, it seems like there may be hope to see some other classic charachters return. Or mabye even see Little Bird come back again for this decade a few times.

Yeah, I've seen Little Bird in books and in one sketch about the word "casa." However, since it was established that Snuffy was Big Bird's best friend, they probably felt that Little Bird was no longer needed. However, I do recall the 90s ep with Little Bird looking for a home. It's possible she could still show up every once in a while.

Little Bird was also seen with Elmo and some AMs in the "We Are All Earthlings" song- I think that was probably circa 1990 or so.

Although Little Bird was performed by a female muppeteer and many people think of the character as a girl, on at least one record album, Little Bird is referred to as "he" and "him".

In a very early Guy Smiley game show called Pick Your Pet, Little Bird appeared and was voiced by Jim. The object of the game was the contestant (Betty Lou) got a chance to select one of three creatures as her pet. Her choices were Little Bird, a dog, and Beautiful Day Monster.

Little Bird: "Well, I'll live in a cage, and only need to eat a thimble-full of bird seed. And if you pick me, I'll chirp for you. how 'bout that?"

In the end, Betty Lou got to go home with Beautiful Day.

I wonder if she also got a free case of Turtle Wax?:smirk:

I remember the "Pick your pet" skit quite well. If that bird was supposed to be Little Bird (it certainly had the look and size of Little Bird) the voice sounded different in the skit (like a man's voice instead).
And if the girl contestant was Betty Lou then perhaps that adds further likelihood that it was Prairie Dawn in the skit with beginning, middle, and end. Reason I say is because the voice of the girl in this pet skit (especially picturing how she excitedly decides on, "Number 3!" to the audience's groans) is a little different than the girl muppet in the parts of the story skit. In that skit it really sounded just like Prairie Dawn in other Dawn skits.
