Does anyone know why they got rid of most of the female characters from the first season??
I really miss Hilda, Mildred & Zelda, and Miss Mousey too. One day she just disappeared...(I bet the pig took out a hit on her!!!!) Now there's really just Piggy, Janice & Camilla.

Well as far as Hilda is concerned the main reason why she was discontinued after season one was because her performer Erin Ozker(I think I have the name right) quit her job on the show and I suppose they couldn't get anyone on hand to replace her who'd be able to do justice to the voice she provided for Hilda. Not having many female performers probably wouldn't have helped either.
I have nothing to contribute regarding the other characters such as Mildred. Perhaps somebody else could help you?

I think you do still see them all in the opening spot after the first season...

Mildred is at the wedding. She sits next to the members of Geri and the Atrics.

Simple. Other than Piggy and Janice, the others just weren't funny enough. Especially the ones performed by women. Sorry ladies, but it's true.

I'm sorry but Mildred and Hilda where very funny I think the reason they got rid of Hilda is because the look of the puppet wasn't that great....and she didn't play that big of a role on the muppet show.
Mildred on the other hand was brought back for muppets tonight so don't say for a moment such things...and thats not very nice to say things about wimen puppeters like that. btw I never found janice that funny but classic miss piggy is A number 1!

Yeah. It didn't seem like Janice was that popular in the first season so you sort of wonder why she was recast rather than written out of the show. But I guess the main reason was that she was needed for the band and for Vet's Hospital. So for the most part, I'm like totally glad Richard Hunt made the Janice we know today. Fer sure.

Mildred did appear every now and then after the first season of The Muppet Show, and even in significant roles.

She appeared as a reporter in the Rich Little episode (you could say that this was her only backstage scene in the entire show run, though she was actually outside the theater), and she had a line in At The dance in the Pearl bailey episode. She also had a non-speaking cameo in the UK Spot, Jogging, in the Danny Kaye episode.
