Kermit, with ATTITUDE?!

What is up with Kermit the Frog lately? I've seen him on several game shows ("Who Wants to Be a Millionaire," "Hollywood Squares" and "To Tell the Truth") telling off-color jokes! That kind of stuff might be fine for someone like David Letterman or Jay Leno, but Kermit? As a puppet myself, I'm very concerned. When puppets start showing character inconsistencies it is almost always a huge warning sign of some larger psychological problem. Kermit may be suffering a personality crisis of some sort.

I know some of you may be saying, hey, Kermit has always told jokes, sometimes they've been pretty hip. That's true, but not like the ones he's been telling lately. I won't go into the details here, but trust me they were pretty blue. Hey, everyone knows I'm no lily-hearted priss, and the jokes themselves weren't outrageously offensive; it was that they came from Kermit the Frog, beloved children's icon, that was unacceptable.

Why is this happening? What is wrong with Kermit?

i don't think kermit is into the business of being a childrens icon. people throughout this site have stated that kermit and the muppets were not always about being nice and friendly. i think over the course of the past 30 years or so thats why kermit has been percieved, as someone that is a childs icon. now sesame street is percieved as children's show that is a huge icon for children. not that kermit isn't, it's just that he can say whatever he wants. a few years ago he said something that kind of shocked some of the people on hollywood squares, and then replied by saying "i'm not on sesame street anymore." so i guess kermit is trying to get away from that nice, clean attitude.

I haven't heard the comments myself, but taking your word for it, that's a shame. I always allow the performers some leeway when improvising; they might get carried away. But I was hoping the "porn" comment was a one-time accident. Apparently Steve got good feedback from it and decided to follow that course. Steve, please TURN BACK NOW before it's too late!

Bunk. Bunk, I say. It's not even making a mountain out of a molehill. It's like making a mountain out of several grains of sand. I think Steve's Kermit tempers the frog's historical persona with fresh modern influences to keep him a living breathing personality and not a bland corporate kiddy icon. The article is clever and cute, but I don't see much real substance to it.

Long live the quick-witted green frog.
