(I was told that down is right, up is left, right is backwards, and left is North Dakota)

I thought North Dakota was actually West Virginia, and West Virginia was Louie Anderson!:confused:

That's right. I always confuse Louie Anderson with Peter Jennings (and everyone knows that West Virginia isn't Peter Jennings)...
