We have a cat that we took in during a hurricane. He's light gray with darker stripes. We also have a dog, one of the 7 daughters (8 puppies total) of a dog that got away from a neighbor. Outside, our dog will go up to the cat and sniff him from head to tail (or tail to head), and move on. Inside, however, she'll try to get him unless one of us is carrying him. Then, either she has to go into my room, or the cat has to go into the other bedroom.
