I was driving home the other night, with two of my kids, when we passed a mimi-van with a movie player, I said, look they are watching the muppets, and my kids said no, elmo is a puppet from sesame street and not a muppet. I contend all classic characters from sesame street are muppets, kermit, miss piggy, elmo, bert & ernie.

Is Elmo a muppet and are all the others I mentioned?

Hi and welcome to Muppet Central. Yes, Elmo is a Muppet. He's a Muppet from Sesame Street though, and not a Muppet Show Muppet. It's kind of one of those logic statements.
All puppet characters from Sesame Street are Muppets.
But the characters from The Muppet Show are the ones who get the more recognizable tag of being known as "Muppets" precisely because the word is in the show's name itself.

Hope this helps and have fun exploring the rest of the forums. :wisdom:

"Sesame Street" is one "family" or group of Muppet characters - typically referred to as "The Sesame Street Muppets". The cast of the Muppet Show has come to be known as "Classic Muppets"
