Unfortunately my cat Jebbie has to be put to sleep on Wednesday. (As I mentioned, he's been sick.) We've brought him to the vet & giving him medicine but it doesn't help at all. He's losing weight too. Now you can feel his backbone & ribs. The vet had said that possibly if he got a CAT scan of his nasal area then we could see the source of Jebbie's colds. It's expensive ($600) and if the source is found the operation costs over $1000. So I told some Cat Chat women this & 2 of them remarked how cruel it is to put Jebbie to sleep when we go on cruises that are more than $1600. If they could only see how miserable the poor cat is! Do they think my family & I WANT to put Jebbie to sleep? He's SUFFERING ,darn it! I explained to them over & over how sick he is. One woman even made a comment that we put our animals to sleep when the animals aren't convienient for us anymore! THAT ISN'T TRUE AT ALL!!:cry: I LOVE my cats VERY much! They're like my kids! How can anyone be so cruel? Do you all think I'm being heartless because I'm having my cat put to sleep? He's 13 years old & as I said NOTHING is helping him with this cold he has.

Hi I'm really sorry you're having to go through this. I think when your cat is on the older side like 13 and suffering as you're saying, sometimes it is more merciful to put them to sleep. Because even if this one problem is solved, at that age he could end up with yet another health problem. So I totally understand. ::smile:

I'm sorry not everyone gets that; but you know how it is, people can be very weird about pets, heh. I've loved all my pets like kids, but they are animals and the rules are different with them. It can be more merciful when they're older and/or suffering to let them go.

You know, before Tommie was put to sleep, and she was so sick, I went to vet, after vet, after vet, from "pet emergency hospital" to "pet emergency hospital", only to be met with the repeated stock answer, "Oh, well, see, we don't really treat bunnies, you need a specialist for bunnies since they're an 'exotic' animal."

WHAT KIND OF PET EMERGENCY HOSPITAL ARE YOU IF YOU CAN'T TREAT A BUNNY RABBIT?!

I mean, Tommie was SICKER than sick, she was already losing her will to live... if you're a pet emegency hospital, you should be able to treat more than just cats and dogs!

I really hate that these "small animal specialists" are so hard to come by too, because it's not like every single fricken pet owner in the world owns a cat or a dog, some people out there have all kinds of different "small" or "exotic" animals - hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, chinchillias, mice, rats, lizards,etc... there's an abundent amount of people out there who own those kinds of pets, and how frustrating do you think it is to take them to an emergency hospital when they're sick, only to be met with, "Sorry, we don't treat those kinds of animals, you need a specialist", and there are no **** specialists around?! ****, for Tommie's first initial surgery, I had to take her OUT OF TOWN because the only nearby hospital who had vets who could perform surgery on bunnies was miles away in another stinkin' city!

And how are bunnies "exotic" animals anyway?! You see them hippity-hoppin' out in the wild in our own neighborhoods for cripe's sake!

I had the same problem with my iguanas. The vets in my area had no idea how to treat them. They tried, but in the end both died of illnesses the vets just couldn't figure out how to treat. I still miss them. People think lizards don't show affection and aren't intelligent. Those people are wrong. My iguanas knew the difference between me and other people. My one iguana, Lizzie only liked me and my mom. She'd freak if anyone else came near her. My other one, Iggy, used to sleep with me. I bawled when she died.

you know ive actually wondered this myself...i also have a pet turtle but who do i take him to if something happens, ive heard "vets" can repair a shell if it cracks or something happens but doesnt seem like thats around here....back in the day when i had freddy before he passed( you freddy was a pet frog before a puppet) who would i have taken him to if he was sick
my sister owns a ferret where is she supposed to go, we even have a bird? all honest questions are we just to let them die if they get sekc?

even my own dog who died last year we had to take to a specialist cause our local one didnt know how to treat his diabetes and by the time we found out the full extent of his sickness it was to late

I recall some years back when my 16-yr-old cat and my pet lizard died within a couple of days of one another (completely unrelated illnesses). I was in too much grief to even react to the second one (the lizard) although I loved him too, and had built him special climbing things and a sleeping house and hand-fed him live crickets every day (and I HATE bugs).

I'm glad no idiot suggested to me I should do more or spend the $500 it would have taken for a risky surgery for my cat -- which the vets admitted was a long shot anyway, as she was slowly suffering from kidney failure. I took her to the vet after years of worrying about this and doing all I could for her, and months of personally administering IV fluids under her skin to counter the kidneys, plus expensive special diets, checkups, etc... she died that same day before I could get back to see her again and I still feel horribly guilty for not being there. I laid her to rest at my mom's mountain property, in an antique wicker hamper, in silk, with her favorite moonflowers all around her. I raised her from a kitten and I've never forgotten her. If some a** had DARED suggest to me I wasn't doing enough to prolong her life (and she was very much in pain toward the end) I would have gone ballistic on them, gone postal, probably be in jail now!

Very very sorry for your loss, Kathy. :sympathy:

Thank you (((((EVERYONE)))))) FINALLY people (besides my family & a close friend Offline) that aren't judging me! It just drives me crazy that people who have cats like I do wouldn't understand at all!:grr:  And Kris (newsie) I'm about ready to go postal on the 2 I mentioned to you in an Email. The only thing stopping me is that whenever I get myself super upset, I get myself sick (we're talking seizures:eek:) . Trust me everyone..I DON'T want/need that! My friend & my sister told me to just disregard the people that are telling me that putting Jebbie to sleep is selfish. My sister is taking Jebbie to the vet on Wednesday (I accidentally told you guys Tuesday) & he (the vet) will see what to do from there. (BTW, that operation that I mention is more like $5,000.I found this out tonight.) My sister & I have both noticed that Jebbie's hardly eating. If he needs to be put to sleep, then it has to be. He'll be happier.

I deeply sympathize Kathy. I know how hard it is to lose a pet. The really tough thing is that nine times out of ten you have to have the vet put them to sleep instead of just letting them quietly die at home when the end comes.

We had two cats and a dog and all of them were so sick we had to put them to sleep one by one over a long period of time. The worst one was the first of the cats. We will never know exactly what happened but one of them went for a wander across the road one night and came back seriously injured. The vet said the poor creature was hurt so bad internally that the best thing would be for her to be put out of her misery. We can't prove it but we strongly suspect that some cruel people had brutally beaten our poor cat. We had overheard sounds of some party or other gathering in the neighbourhood somewhere.:mad:

It's NOT selfish! Your poor baby is suffering, and if you don't want him to be miserable anymore, you are hardly a bad owner. Putting a pet to sleep is extremely painful and hard, not an easy decision at all. My Nicky was just put to sleep in February - his lungs were collapsing and he couldn't eat or use the litter box. I miss him terribly every day.
