Well, I'm certainly not a "newb" as you put it, but from what I understand the lyrics have been cited both ways. The way I see it, both ways are correct.

In the earlier SS versions of the song, the backup singers (two girls) did sing "Ba dee ba dee bee." This version of the song is on the tape "Sesame Street Celebrates Jim Henson."

However, the Sullivan appearance, and Ep.1 of TMS, both used the version "Doo do doo do do."

I wrote an article over a year ago and researched all this deeply, but the guy who was bringing it up to use it still hasn't yet.

I am starting to get dizzy trying to keep track of tall this ba-dee-bee-do's and doo-dee-doo-bees and bee-bee-dee-bo's. The point is that she now has the lyrics and can listen to the song whenever she wants. Who really cares how the words go, most of us just hum that part anyways.

Both lyrics are indeed correct & as a matter of fact, the song was used elsewhere too from what I have heard. I have heard the story that the song was actually in a foreign porn flick. I have a hard rock, fast paced version of the song. I put in on one of my mix CDs a few years ago. Cannot remember where I got it. I forgot all about it until I popped the disk in my car stereo a few weeks ago. It uses the "do do do do do" instead of the "ba de be de" but the old SS clip used "dees" & the MS used "dos" Lighten up, erniebert1234ss! The forum is a happy & fun place.

Do The .. Mahna Mahna!

Still looking through my links, but there was a site that contained all
three versions (.ra format) (yes, three...)

The Muppet Show version, the original version released on 45 RPM
(daddy whats a r-record?), and a rare Disco version.

Yes it was such a hit in Sweeden, they decided to Discoise it... A chick
sings the main lyrics in the song, like "Mahna-----ma----na..." with
some disco-like string sounds providing the "dee-doo-bees and
bee-bee-dee-bo's".

And for those old enough to remember The Benny Hill Show, Benny
used the song quite freqently (instrumental) in his "fast moving"
skits.

(and no it was not the "end chase" music, that was "Yakety Sax"
by Boots Randolph)

I've got episode #573 from 1973 on VHS, and it has the spoken intro with Bip Boppity and the two girls, and Bip Boppity walking away at the end (Although it might not be complete, since the first thing one of the girls says is "We could sing a good song, if we had one more person to sing," and that doesn't sound like the first line of a skit).
