I've had three of those in my life. The first two kept breaking a lot, so I still have the third one. I wonder if it still works. Anyway, it seems that it really is a gear problem. Those toys seem to be pretty sensitive. They also have a talking Cookie Monster and Oscar the Grouch.

I have Big Bird, Cookie Monster, and Oscar all in great shape but I dont know whether or not they work. Has anyone seen these on Ebay before and remember how much they were going for?
