Chapter 4:
Emmet Otter and his jug-band had just finished practicing in their treehouse and started walking home.
"Nice day, isn't it?", Emmet asked his friends.
"Sure is", Harvey replied.
"Hey, doesn't that look like the meadow Bean Bunny and his family live in?", Charlie asked as he looked off into the distance.
"Yeah. It does", Wendell replied.
"Remember the day we met him in that meadow?", Emmet asked.
"Who could forget it?", Harvey answered.
A flashback occurs as Emmet tells what happened.
"We were fishing at the river when we heard singing in the distance. We followed the sound for a while until we reached the meadow and saw a bunch of bunnies hopping and singing:
Hello sunshine, hello birds on the wing.
Hello springtime, we've been waiting for spring.
Hello sunshine, hello birds on the wing.
Hello springtime, we've been living for spring.
"As we looked around, I noticed one bunny who looked like he needed some help", Emmet continued.
"That was Bean, right?", Wendell asked.
"Yep. That was Bean.", Emmet said.
Emmet: Hey, little fella. You need some help?
Bean: Yeah. I'm trying to hang this flower chain on that branch, but I can't reach it.
Charlie: We'll help you. What's your name?
Bean: Bean, Bean Bunny.
Emmet: Well, my name's Emmet and these are my friends, Wendell, Harvey and Charlie.
Bean: Nice to meet you.
Harvey: So, what's with all the decorations?
Bean: We're getting ready for the first day of spring. That's when we have our annual Bunny Picnic.
Charlie: Bunny Picnic?
Bean: That's where all the bunnies that live here come together and have fun and celebrate the first day of spring.
Emmet: Sounds very nifty.
Wendell: This meadow is so beautiful.
Bean: Thanks.
Emmet: Here, let me help you with that flower chain. (Hangs chain on the branch) How does that look?
Bean: Looks great. Do you want to meet my family and friends.
Emmet: Sure.
Bean: Twitch! Lugsy! I've made some new friends. Come on over, guys. This is Emmet, Harvey, Wendell and Charlie. Guys, this is my big brother, Lugsy and my big sister, Twitch.
Twitch: Nice to meet you.
Lugsy: So, Where did you guys come from?
Emmet: Frogtown Hollow. It's not very far from here.
Harvey: You should see it. There's a river running through it
Wendell: and everyone who lives there is real nice.
Twitch: I'd like to see it someday.
Lugsy: Me, too.
Mother Bunny: Twitch! Lugsy! Bean! Time to come in!
Twitch: That's our mother. Come with us.
Lugsy: Yeah. Our mom and dad are really nice. I'm sure they won't mind visitors.
Bean: Mother! We have some new friends we want you to see. This is Emmet and this is Harvey, Charlie and Wendell.
Emmet: Hello, Mrs. Bunny.
Mother: Pleasure to meet you boys. Where did you come from?
Emmet: A place called Frogtown Hollow.
Mother: And what do you boys do there.
Emmet: Well, we go to school, do our chores, things like that.
Harvey: We're also a jug-band.
Lugsy, Twitch and Bean: A Jug-band?
Emmet: Yeah. I play washtub bass,
Wendell: I blow the jug
Charlie: I play a cigar box banjo
Harvey: and I play kazoo and washboard.
Lugsy: Wow. I never met a jug-band before.
Twitch: Me, either.
Emmet: Sometimes we perform with my ma. She's real nice.
Charlie: And she has a fantastic singing voice.
Twitch: Our mother has a great singing voice, too. Right, mother?
Mother: Well, I don't know if mine is as good as your mother's, Emmet.
Father: But it's beautiful just the same.
Mother: Aww!
Dog: I'm comin' to get you, bunnies!
Charlie: What was that?
Bean: Don't worry. That's our friend, the dog.
Wendell: Are you sure he's nice?
Bean: Positive. (Whistles) Hey, dog! Over here!
Be-bop: Hey, Be-bop-de-Bean. What's happening?
Bean: Guys, these are our new friends, Emmet, Wendell, Harvey and Charlie.

Babble: A real jug-band! If I'll say it once, I'll say it a thousand times. That's what we need for the picnic, a jug-band. They can sing, play music...
Bunnies: Babble!
Bean: So, would you like to sing at the picnic?
Emmet: Sure. I'm sure my ma would also love to do it. When's the picnic?
Bean: Two days away.
Emmet: We'll do it. Right, guys?
Wendell, Harvey and Charlie: Right!
(Bunnies Cheer)
"And when they had their picnic, we sang and played music for the bunnies and we all had a great time, especially my ma.", Emmet continued.
