I have your answer from Sesame Workshop: Maggie Stack has responded to my email today:

Kevin,

The answer to your question can be found in "Sesame Street Unpaved -
scripts, stories, secrets, and songs" by David Borgenicht (Hyperion, 1998).
Quoted from page 41:

SECRET SNUFFLEUPAFACTS: Mr. Snuffleupagus was originally played by Jerry Nelson, but the costume hurt Jerry's back so much that he had to give up the part to Martin Robinson, who has played Snuffy for more than eighteen years."

I hope you find this information helpful. Thank you for your interest in
Sesame Workshop!

Kind regards,

Maggie

Maggie was not there and is mistaken. The book is wrong. Brian Muehl was left out of it too. Brian created telly and Barkley.

Wow, another Muppeteer on Muppet Central!

I've got a couple of questions for you:

1. You're probably aware of the "Sesame Street Unpaved" program from Noggin. Were there any anonymous characters that you played? (Such as the man helping to find a boy's lost "V", and the man searching for the "D" train)?
2. When did you begin working on Sesame Street? When did you end your work?

I lip-synced to jerry's voice my first season. The next two seasons I did the voice. My back end was played first by Brian muehl, then Frank Kane and then Byran. Michael Earl davis
Ah, then you puppeteered Snuffy some? Cool.

So, then we have the creation of Snuffy, performed by Jerry Nelson, then voiced by Jerry and performed by Michael Earl Davis; then it went to Richard Hunt and THEN to Marty Robinson?

Rearenders were Brian Muehl, then Frank Kane, then Brian again?

Just to get a full understanding of the chronology.
Why? I dunno, but we geeks like to know this stuff. :stick_out_tongue:
