My partner and I saw the new Will Smith, Jason Bateman, Charlize Theron movie "Hancock" this afternoon even after being warned by critical consensus to stay away. I have to admit to listening to critics, while not reacting to them. We were both pleasantly surprised.

Yes, the film is a mess of themes that are never fully realized, but so are so many other action pictures. It has been said that the film was focus-grouped to death by Sony and that marred much of the focus and underlying subtext of the picture. The film's lead character is actually supposed to be a metaphor for modern America. That concept kind of gets lost too.

It's still a good fun popcorn film that I hope they turn into a franchise. I can see a future sequel surpassing the quality of this film. I'm no big Will Smith fan, but he was great in this. It's really not his typical role. I decided to turn my brain off and enjoy the movie for what it is. I wonder how it will fare this holiday weekend? Wall-E will likely still keep the number one slot with Hancock just under it. I hope so.

B- For a popcorn film (solid C for a regular motion picture)

It's very blurry and to early to tell right now just how things will turn out at the Box office and this weekend, but I am just hoping that with all the competition out there that there is enough to go around for well-E and there is no doubt in my mind that their wont be. But I say with this movie, well usually I like things that most critics don't. I mean it doesn't have to be smart or really good for me to wan to watch something anyway. But I here this movie is a bit smarter than most movies this summer so far, with a few exceptions. But to me it just looks really fun and like it will be funny in a sort or smarmy way it you will. I don't know what anyone else things but it looks cool to me and like a lot of fun. The special effect look really great.

I saw it and thought it wasn't as bad as the critics are making it out to be. I've definitely seen worse. My friend won free tickets to an advance screening so we saw it on Monday for free, so I definitely can't complain for that!

I really did think it had an interesting plotline, however, it was a hair too short for all the things they had going on. They could've taken an extra 15 minutes or so to flush out the story just a bit, especially because of the twist they introduce to us about 3/4 of the way in. All that being said though, I think it really was decent. Probably wouldn't have paid to see it normally, but would be worth renting if anyone was so inclined.

I give it a B.

Ah yes. the old school Will Smith action movie that comes out just before the 4th of July. In the spirit of Independence Day and both men in Black films.

I have to admit, I'd like to see it, but I'll wait for a DVD rental or something. there's too much I'd rather see.

I still have to see Kung Fu Panda, Ironman, Hulk, and the upcoming Dark Night.

I really want to see this movie. I wasn't expecting too much out of it except for maybe a funny(ish) superhero movie.

I recently watched Jumper, which I was expecting to be horrible the way the critics talked about it, but it wasn't bad. I enjoyed it for what it was. I think with movies like that and with Hancock, you gotta go into it not expecting much other than maybe just having fun.

That right. Going in with that mindset is spot-on. I felt the same way about Jumper too. Yeah, there are huge plot holes in that film that they literally throw a bus into! Still, it's an interesting premise, good effects and good fun. I think some critics need to go back and watch some cherished 80s films and see how they measure up with an older perspective. Not every film can be Citizen Kane. Not even Citizen Kane (a film fave I like very much).

Three films I still want to see include Hellboy 2, Dark Knight and X-Files. Man, there's so much this summer. Next year won't be this big.

Oh my gosh I just saw it. I seriously cried. I laughed. I loved it. I never thought I would be able to identify with Will Smith, lol.
