While I hate HSM too (for obvious reasons I stated before), there is just too much realism of said high school that makes me wanna stay away from it. Sure, I guess I'd like it if I got the chance or something... but the whole aspect of the realism of high school... I mean, even the TEACHERS hate them. People treating the protagonists like crap... I watch TV to escape.I'm not a big fan of High School Musical because it's a little too glossy for my taste and it largely speaks to a younger age group while this one easily connects to my high school experiences.
I think the victories in Glee are smaller, but just as valuable. Anyone who's been in the arts in High School can attest to the fact that the department always gets hosed while the sports teams get all the acclaim and funding. While I hate HSM too (for obvious reasons I stated before), there is just too much realism of said high school that makes me wanna stay away from it. I have the same problem with Ugly Betty, It's like she's in a world that doesn't want her... It's just too depressing for my tastes. I'd rather have something where the character who is forced to be an outcast can rise up and become a hero in a half hour time frame... not the run of a series. You know, a good ol' fashioned fantasy type deal. I say, life's depressing enough not to have to watch something that depresses you.
Now, if it were a lot more like Revenge of the Nerds or something, and the bullies, jocks, and nasty teachers get their comeuppance in a non-violent, comedic way, I'm all for it.
Not having seen Glee, i can't comment on how this may apply, but i don't see that in Ugly Betty (though i see how it can be perceived that way) One of the many great things about Betty is that she DOES often end up on top or even when she doesn't, she holds on to her dignity, her soul, and ends up coming across as the most truly beautiful person on the show...and she gets some pretty major cutie-pie love interests!I have the same problem with Ugly Betty, It's like she's in a world that doesn't want her... You know... I take it back, actually. The villains in that show are very cartoony (not an insult coming from me)... in fact, if you made the villain on this show all men, they'd have long capes and opera coats, twiddle their pencil thin mustaches and chortle "NYeah Eh EH!" Which I like. I haven't seen enough of Glee to really speak on its behalf (and had I known that Modern Family sucked, I woulda watched that, instead of boring myself with another Office wanna be), but the villains (or antagonists) are almost real life. Not having seen Glee, i can't comment on how this may apply, but i don't see that in Ugly Betty (though i see how it can be perceived that way) One of the many great things about Betty is that she DOES often end up on top or even when she doesn't, she holds on to her dignity, her soul, and ends up coming across as the most truly beautiful person on the show...and she gets some pretty major cutie-pie love interests!
