Why does old Garfield merchandise say (C)United Feature Syndicate, but new Garfield merchandise says (C)PAWS?

From 1994 onward, the strip was distributed by Universal Press Syndicate.

Jim Davis did not actually own the copywrite of his own character until 1994. UFS had the copywrite and distribution....now Davis owns Garfield under PAWS, and the distribution of the strip, as Boober said is United Press Syndicated
