It doesnt help with needing stuff RIGHT NOW... but you should try tag sale-ing. I have seem some pretty crazy stuff that people were gettin rid of for next to nothing. I dont make puppets but Im SURE you'll find some helpful materials for next to no money.

You can definitely score nice fur off throws, rugs, old coats and those sorts of things for free or cheap
Here's a tip for anyone concerned about quality...when you're buying fur take a look at the back of it. If you're buying (for example) brown fur and on the back you see brown and white woven together, that's usually poor quality fur.
Ironically, the fur I got off the throw pillow for Steve DID have white on the back, but it's still great fur; I was pleasantly surprised to see none of the tufts came out when I had to use double-surface tape to keep an ill-fitted hat on his head.

Joanns does have some good fur, but not always consistant. For instance, you might find the right color one day, but they might never have it again. If not online, that's usually where I get fur.

Some local fabric stores will have some, too. I remember going into one a while ago that had the perfect red fur to make an Elmo puppet.

your in nYc or NY State?

i think u need to explore the garment district.
Hey James, I'm within commuting distance of the city. Was just curious - do you think the garment district is pretty random on which stores to explore or are there definite places that are a 'must' for fur?
