This isn't a serious problem, but I figured I'd report it

I receive the usual email whenever there's a new post in a thread I'm subscribed to. This mail includes the sentence "There may be other replies also, but you will not receive any more notifications until you visit the forum again."

However, I seem to be getting a fair few of these mails even when I *haven't* visited said thread in the meantime. I don't believe it's happening for every single new post, but it's definitely happening.

All this started since the upgrade to vBulletin 3 - prior to that I just got the expected number of mails.

Alex,

Are you logging out of the forum when you are done? It sounds like you may be receiving the notifications because you are still logged in.

I will look into any other possibilities though and report back if there is something else you need to do on your end.

No; I'm usually logged in from at least two machines as well. I wouldn't have thought that would make any difference though! Surely it's my last visit to the thread, not the forum, that should reset the system?

Alex,

Here is what the vBulletin folks had to say about your question...

This will happen if they are actively browsing the forums while new messages are posted. They don't have to read the actual thread itself. They just need to be logged and browsing. (It happens to me all the time on these forums.)

Hmm. By 'browsing', do they simply mean 'logged in'? Because I can check my email when I get up in the mornings and find multiple notifications from a single thread, despite the fact that I haven't 'browsed' for at least eight hours

Like I say, this never happened prior to v3, so this still sounds like a bug and they're not willing to admit to it...

I'd recommend that you login and logout with each visit, especially since you use 2+ different machines at any one time. I've always done that and never had any such issues.

I am passing your comments along to vBulletin and will let you know any other feedback.

Ok, since the upgrade in the forum software, the problem has ceased. Like I said, it was a bug and they didn't want to admit to it. Perfectly normal behaviour amongst us software engineers ;-)

It still happens with me! Ive tried to unsubscribe to threads like word association because my email box gets absolutel full but then as soon as I go back to them it subscribes them again. Does anyone know how to stop this?
