Whoa! This is, like, weird, maaan!

I just saw the Connie Stevens ep. of TMS, and Floyd was NOT voiced by Jerry Nelson!!

I, like, had no idea that he had a puppeteer before Jerry! Heck, Jerry ain't even in the credits yet (and I've watched Juliet, Connie, and Joel today), and I don't think I was even aware o' that...

Either I knew all this LONG ago and had totally forgotten it, or it's all new to me---either way, when he was singin' "Ain't Misbehavin' ", it freaked me out! Lol!

Sure glad Jerry came along... (no offense to...who...John Lovelady?... )

Still Jerry! He was just using a different voice. "Mr Bassman", in the Mummenschanz show, also features a different voice for Floyd, but again, he's still performed by Jerry.

Jerry's absence from the credits is presumably an oversight - the segment was taped much later in the production block. You can tell by looking at Janice , she's the newer build of the puppet.

OMG, that was Jerry?!

TOTALLY sounds completely different!! He ain't got that "Jerry edge" most of his characters do, lol. :stick_out_tongue:

And yeah, wow, at least 3 shows don't have him in the credits...interesting...and yeah, you're right, that was a revamped Janice!

I notice these things!

I've listened to this particular song on headphones several times over the last two months, and to me at least, it does sound like Jerry's voice. I think this voice works better for the song than Floyd's normal voice would have, too.

Hey, man, don't be dissing my vocals. Me and the band to a lot of rehearsing and... Oh, right, the new role-play hasn't started yet. Lol.

Seriously, according to the Muppet Central outlines, Jerry uses a different voice for Floyd for those songs, because it's easier to do a bass part for those songs that way. I've heard it on the "Mr. Bassman" episode at the site Animal's Bandstand. I still haven't heard Erin's Janice yet.

By the way, how could you have seen the first three episodes? I didn't think TMS was still on TV anywhere and the first one's the only one they released on VHS or DVD, so I'm sort of curious about that.

He could've gotten them in a trade. That's how I managed to get all 120 eps without them being on TV.

And Byron, he wasn't in the credits of five additional episodes mid-season, #s 11-15: Lena Horne, Peter Ustinov, Bruce Forsyth, Sandy Duncan and Candice Bergen. Presumably he was back in the U.S. to see his daughter, who I believe was born with a terminal illness that cut her life quite short. That was the reason he didn't have any core characters, and probably the reason that Richard was recast as Statler: so that Jerry could come and go without it affecting the show too much.

From the Jerry Nelson interview on the main site:

Back to "The Muppet Show"… In the first season, I did the first two episodes, and we did those in February or March, just to see if everything would work out. Then they went back in the summer to start the rest of the season. I went to Jim and I said, "You know, I want to do the show. I want to work on the show." My daughter had cystic fibrosis, and I spent summers with her. Those were good growth periods for her. Winters are very hard on CF children. Infections in the lungs were one of the things she had to deal with in her short life. I said, "I want to go on, I want to work on the show, but I really think I have to spend this time with Christine." And he said, "All right." As a consequence, I had to give up characters like Statler, whom I had done in "Sex and Violence" and one other show…

That's what I was thinking of doing, after I receive the complete collection from Timelife. It seems episodes of the show are so hard to find these days. I'm glad Timelife includes the Rita Moreno and Juliet Prowse episodes from season 1.

It's sorta scratchier and deeper and makes her sond a littel dumber in my opinion. But, she's a LOT more hippy. I don't really like Erin's Janice, but it's okay.

Trying looking for the original Muppet Show album (or tape) at your local library, or log on to MC Radio. There's a Vet's Hospital sketch on both from the first season; it's the one with George the Janitor as the patient. It features Richard's Piggy and Eren's Janice.
