I know. Basically everything that set up the rest of the series got the chopping block (most of it while it was still in the writing stage).
Plus, I think it took itself too seriously. They seemed to have thrown out the fun along with the plot setup and the mythological accuracy (e.g. dragging out Hollywood's old 'Hades is EEEEEEvil' chestnut).
When they announced Sea of Monters as a movie, my fist thought was how much damage control they'd need to do just for this story alone to work.
Though, if the trailers are an indication, they're certainly sticking closer to the tone of the books this time. And I still love the fact that a movie about Greek mythology is being directed by a guy named Thor.
