If memory serves me correctly, I seem to recall reading something on the web about using terry cloth to 'skin' puppets. It gives a nice look but doesn't look too "muppety". I'm not sure how well it hides seams, though. It could be a real 'bear to work with':embarrassed:

Most of the terry cloth I've ever dealt with had a pretty large weave to it. Not like burlap or anything, mind you, but large enough to make it unattractive as a material to work with (to me). It has a very particular nap to it that, when used in an unexpected way, will probably look really cool.

(SECRET! When I was on-set with the Muppets at Extreme Makeover, I believe the wattles on Gonzo's chicken back-up group were made from red terry cloth! Shhhhhh! Keep it under your hat!)

Personally I use anti-pill fleece when making puppets for myself/fun/practice, but when it comes to puppet for more professional use I go antron.

In my town we have a Goodwill Outlet store and during the summers, there are all kinds of wonderful wool jackets on sale for $1.25 each. I think this summer I am going to buy a whole bunch of them and see which of the fabrics works best- although I might end up with a lot of black test puppets!
