"So let me get this straight..." Mrs. Pepper spoke clearly into the blunt gray receiver of the telephone held at the moment in her free hand, her writing hand jotting down a few notes. "You're offering me an able-bodied staff? And they'll take the orders out to my customers?"
"Yes, that's vhat I'm saying Mrs. Pepper."
A faint smile danced across her face... She could tell she would like this person, er Muppet much more than that Mr. Dredgewood.
"Alon with my little darlings, ve'll have a few special selections for your customers to choose from amongst the delicious doughy desserts you make at that fine bakery."
"You've actually been here before?!?" Mrs. Pepper said, a bit surprised that her new business partner had been a former patron.
"Of course I have... There are a lot of friends there in that town of Hensonville of mine... Ewen have a roommate over in the dorms building."
"Oh OK... Think I've got all the recipes, they seem simple enough. Can't thank you enough."
"No, the pleasure is all mine..."
"OK then, you send them over and I'll make sure they return with half the proceeds from the day's sales each morning."
The bakery's new mistress was satisfied with the exchange. She would get what she wanted- a steady team of workers to help her in the shop-, and the Count would get some moneys which would go towards the Monster Ball Fund. Although it was Hooper's Store where most of the people went for a quick lunchtime fix or even up to Jim's Coffee House, Mike's Bakery did its fare share of business with the crowd of Muppets and humans living here in the town. Muppet monsters and kids came in from time to time, checking the posterboard announcing the new specials...

Customers, as frequently or not they may have been, filled out their orders at the counter stating if they wanted cookies or smallish pastries lined with whichever of the various fillings listed on the wall next to the cash register. Mrs. Pepper started to ease into her new job, each person or thing that walked in assuring her that she had made the right decision moving to this place.
"I'm coming..." "Here you go..." "Ooh, me can hardly wait!"
Their deliveries fresh out of the oven and ready to go, the waitresses flew off into the yawning twilight just stretching its folds above the sleepy cityscape. Their boxes were enveloped inside crisp yellow-orange wrapping paper, branded with a bounty of little black bats. Two tags were afixed to the top lid: one stating Counting Castle Confections with a 1-2-3 cookie logo, and another card saying Mike's Bakery showing off an edible softened pink rose emblem. Twelve lovely girl bats flapped their wings, darting hither and yon, tracking the different drop-off points throughout the town. Their ears bristled slightly beneath the ghost white pins tucked in place. The modeled chocolate black waitress vests clung to their furry bodies from the early October nightly chill, while the breeze buffetted their almost completely bare legs given the matching short skirts and slippers they wore.
"Here you are Mr. Hunt" one of the twelve said, handing over the box of chocolate glazed Boston Scream doughnuts.
"You remembered to remove the scream, fright?"
"Of course sir" she said, fluttering the dark lashes above her Muppety ball-orbed eyes.
"Aw... How can I say No to that... Hold on..."
"Mr. Hunt! No, please... That's more than enough!"
"I insist" he affirmed stuffing the little sack with quarters generously.
Another little girl bat could be heard laughing nearby, she was rolling over herself performing summersaults in the night sky knocking the air around her in the company of Jerry Nelson. Though his health was a bit touch and go, he still favored the bat with some of his routines sneaking halfdollars into her leathery drawbag. Both girls' bags were so full they threatened to burst apart at the seams. A few patches of tape later secured the contents, weighing down the twins winging their way back before fetching another round of perfectly preserved parcels rushing to finish by the stroke of midnight.
"Thank you girls... Your Count will be very pleased with tonight's haul" Mrs. Pepper crowed, adding up and dividing the booty at the crack of dawn. "Good thing you girls need your beauty sleep, cause quite frankly, I could do with some forty winks myself."
The shopkeeper hung a "Closed" sign outside the doors merrily trodding off to her own bunk for a well-deserved siesta.
