i think gonzo's eyelids are made out of foam.

The site that Buck pointed out gives you a great picture of how to do regular eyelids.

I also like using plastic spoons (minus the handle) for eyes. A little change in the position or an additon of a "lid" or lashes can be dramatic. And, they look rather professional if I do say so myself.

Hint: becareful of the type of glue you use to apply your home-made "spoon" eyes. Very HOT glue can melt the plastic spoon and cause a rather horrific demise to an otherwise perfect creation. Baaaaaaaaaad experience and quite frustrating.

I use any number of things for eyes. Ping-pong balls, plastic spoons, sun glasses, you name it! It makes for a wider variety... My favorite so far is ping-pong balls though, like Tztz said, depending on the design of the puppet.
