I don't think it had any affect over the direction Sesame Street went in.

It certainly kicked subtle humor (like that of the 'maniacs or even The Muppets themselves) off the air for a good long time.

It did happen. It reduced The Muppets to second string commercials. Thankfully, Disney is getting back on the ball with The Muppets now.
