Thanks folks, I knew I'd get an answer to that mysterious punchline if I through the question open here.

And I was mistaken, I'm not slapping my head and saying "Oh, of course" because I never heard of that phrase "make hay when the sun shines". It may have been popular when Jim Henson, Frank Oz and Sesame writers were growing up but not for me.
